General Thoughts

Just thinking out loud here... I want this album to be as loose and honest as possible. I'd like to experiment with overdubbing (acoustic guitar, banjo, full orchestra, crazy sounds...etc) but I don't think we should get too crazy with it. The overdubs will be there to reinforce the sound we're after - not to lead it. I think the more organic the recording process is, the better it will be.

However, that means we will really have to play our asses off in the studio and might ultimately mean that the way were are playing some of these songs right now is insufficient. I think it comes down to the energy and emotion put into the song during our first recording session. We should be willing and able to do multiple takes/versions of songs quickly and with a ton of energy. Of course there are a few songs that deserve the quiet, but in general we need to amp these song up significantly.

This organic/honest capturing of the songs is also important for the piano player (and other extra instruments...) I think they need to be in the studio while we're doing our live takes.

I agree on two points among others:

1. that we need to play these songs a few different ways. some will be different intentionally while others will naturally be different bc we rarely play a song the same way twice. To add to that, there are ways & methods of using the studio to reconfigure a song once it has been tracked which brings up the next point...

2. Playing with energy. Like Tom said, this should be an organic experience with natural sounds - not processed, compressed or doctored. We'll have to bring a natural energy without trying to hard. That will be especially important with Eddie's vocals bc at the end of the day that is going to be the instrument that reaches out & grabs the listener. If all our sounds come together to be honest & sincere it will reach them & if its not it will fall short. On our first CD we just did whatever came to mind while this time we have be more aware of how each take should dictate what each person does in order to serve the song.

I'm watching Tom Berringer in Sniper on AMC. 'One shot, one kill.'

Agreed on the energy. How about this: we play standing up. It's a little thing, but if you think about the difference, it can be big. Tim, you can still sit down though.
